Why the two calendars drift
The Hijri year follows the moon: twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 days in all. That is roughly eleven days shorter than the solar year, which is why Ramadan moves earlier each year and why a lunar age runs about three per cent higher than a solar one.
The conversions here use the Umm al-Qura calendar, the calculated calendar used in Saudi Arabia and by your browser — the same one behind the Hijri date in this site’s header and on the masjid timetable. A calculated date can differ by a day from a local moon sighting; the masjid always confirms the start of Ramadan and the two Eids by sighting.
